Butterfly dance

I designed this Furisode when I was 19, so I could wear it for my coming-of-age ceremony.

The image created is that of butterflies, which have been dyed in many various colors via the Yuzen process of dyeing, floating atop the slides.

I was particular about all aspects of this piece of work, but I was especially particular about the use of “color”, and I would like you to pay attention to the red that is vivid and seems to draw one in.

This piece became the starting point of my work in kimono design. Until the completion of one Furisode, I went through many tens of manufacturing processes, and worked under artisans for half a year before completing my self-designed Furisode.

I was moved by the ultimate artisan skills that inherit tradition and was drawn into kimono-making all at once.

STRONG IN THE RAIN

Using as a motif the poor boy living in photographer Ken Domon's coal mine, I dyed the English translation of Miyazawa Kenji’s “Strong in the rain” onto the kimono.

A 4.5 year-old boy who goes to pick up BOTA barefooted, taking no notice of the danger.

I felt like I was reminded of something important that is being forgotten in the world today.

I designed this in a digitalized way with a sense of slipping back in time and looking at the boy.

Don't leave...

Have you not left something behind???

I went out onto office streets and shopping streets to take photographs of people from behind, uploaded them one by one onto the computer and designed this in a realistic way.

Leaving the ground color as it, I used a printing block and one color to dye the human figures and words.

It means, “Don’t leave (behind)…”.

To the people who looked at this kimono, put on this kimono—“What not to leave behind???” I hope you can think about this inside yourself as you look at and feel the back views of the people.

Your dream, your pride… anything is fine.

When you were young, you were filled with self-confidence, had many aspirations and dreams, and spent each day looking at things with a sparkle in your eyes.

However, after becoming an adult, you clash with reality and get manipulated by various things, leading a busy life in which you try to get over one day by one day.

Things that are forgotten and left behind in everyday life whereby repetition, and more repetition, has become the norm.

What have you forgotten???

Bless you <black>

May there be plenty of blessings on you!

May you lead a happy life!

These are the meanings that I have included in this piece of work.

For people who have worn this kimono, and people who saw others wearing this kimono.

Music Disc <monotone>

In order to develop a unique checkered pattern, I designed it using Music Discs as a motif. 2 styles, monochrome and colored, exist but because the design is novel, I stuck to using traditional Japanese color.

Tears of Fower

This is my first piece of work produced using an inkjet method.

I tried this method because I wanted to express the motif of gerberas and water drops realistically.

The fabric is so thin and soft that the cloth seems like a dress when it is put on.

Darkness

As this piece of work was made with the aim of submitting it to the
AMUSE Artist Audition, I decided to take the plunge.
I took the photographs with the cooperation of the model and designed
it in an avant-garde way like a poster.

The theme revolves around the vague feeling of insecurity that is peculiar to young girls.

Flowers and women

Holding a camera, I went out on the streets to take photographs of women.

This person’s shadow is made up of women.

These are shadows of single mothers, women who work on the night streets, and so on—women who live strong in their own respective way.

I have placed colorful colorful flowers on the shadows of these women. Various parts of the flowers, from the veins and fibres to the cells, have been dyed.

Fading Memory

I have expressed flames using color gradation from the hem.

The theme, is war. A sad thing that humans brought about.

In my world, I want to express in a beautiful way somehow, the people who lost their lives in a scary, but unjust way.

I produced this piece of work thinking that way.

In the flames, the many who lost their lives are floating up vaguely as smoke in the shade of the pink.

At the hem are people who are leading their lives normally.

It is by no means a beautiful piece of work, but the themes that are included are heavy.

Even if they do not know the details, to people who take a glance at it, it is scary.

But beautiful.

It will be considered a successful piece of work if you feel something as you walk past this… …

Strange Fruit

I produced this cotton yukata while listening to Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit, which is also the title of this work.

Although I heard it only once, on the night of the day that I heard it, this song was flowing through even my dreams.

JINBAORI

For the first time, I made this with the presumption that it will be worn by men.

Literally, it is a Jinbaori style that I will like to slip back in time and put on generals of the Warring States period.

I made into form the image that filled my head exactly the way it was.

There will be a complete change in image once this is put on.

Point to note is how the color runs on the back and on both sides.

“Le vent et la lumière” ~

2009.05

This is a collaboration with French author Nadine Ribault

I got inspiration from long novel Le vent et la lumiere (the wind and the light)
(Publisher: Joelle Losfeld [2006]) and produced this work.
The end of a female sculptor’s tragic love is portrayed in a simple way,
like a traditional Japanese painting.
Quietly, beautifully portrayed, this is a piece that packs a “quiet, quiet impact”.
